VP, Investments & Research

DRI Healthcare (“DRI”), is a pioneer in global pharmaceutical royalty monetization. We accelerate therapeutic innovation by providing capital to inventors, academic institutions, and biopharma companies. We focus on medicines that matter – pursuing deals for medicines that have a demonstrable positive impact on the world, aiming to acquire dependable, patent-protected cash flow streams derived from the sales of those important drugs. Since our founding in 1989, DRI has invested multiple billions of dollars into life science organizations, by acquiring or creating royalties on industry gold standards such as Eylea, Keytruda, and Zytiga. DRI Healthcare Trust was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2021, and in the last 3 years alone we have deployed ~$1B across 10 deals. The company is highly focused on accelerating our deployment into the dynamic biopharmaceutical industry which is increasingly recognizing the benefits of royalty investments.

Position Overview:

The VP, Investments & Research is a “deal manager” responsible for managing deal diligence and execution for DRI’s strong pipeline of deal opportunities. The Vice President (Equivalent to Director or Executive Director at an Investment Bank) will directly manage a team of highly skilled mid & junior level investment team members to conduct complete end-to-end clinical, commercial and valuation assessment of biopharma drugs. The VP of Research is also responsible for creating structuring proposals for DRI’s counterparties on deals. The position reports directly to DRI’s Chief Investment Officer. Position is located in New Jersey or Toronto. Relocation assistance is provided for eligible candidates.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Function as the point person on deals from start of the research process through and including the completion & signing of deals.
  • Conduct deep due diligence on clinical stage and approved products to assess qualitative and quantitative value of biopharma assets and/or companies. Translate research into sales forecasts and valuation.
  • Lead and mentor a team of 2-3 mid/junior research professionals.
  • Work with DRI’s internal and external counsel on matters related to contracts and intellectual property on potential investment ideas.
  • Partner with other internal departments and functions including sourcing, and the operations team for deal.
  • Work with outside consultants as required to enhance and/or confirm/refute team’s diligence.
  • Make appropriate risk/reward assessments regarding potential deals and present investment recommendations to DRI’s Investment Committee and Board of Directors.

Educational Requirements

Qualified candidates must hold an undergraduate degree in the Life Sciences or possess relevant work experience in the biopharma eco-system: Biotech/Pharmaceutical companies, Investment Banking, Equity Research, Consulting. An advanced scientific degree (MSc, PharmD, PhD, MD) would be considered an advantage but not critical if individual has strong relevant experience.

Professional Experience

  • Has business acumen and a pragmatic, market-based commercial mindset. Strong research, financial, analytical, diligence, forecasting and product valuation skills.
  • A strong command of life science-oriented investing techniques including an ability to do research and tease out meaningful and actionable key data. A proven record of rigorous planning, and a thorough understanding of risk.
  • Has the professional maturity to operate effectively at senior levels with internal and external constituents. Has ability to prepare briefing documents and presenting recommendations to senior management and/or investment committees.
  • Possesses robust science and technology acumen and understands the drug development and product registration process. Knows the science, clinical practices, market dynamics and competitive products in major markets.
  • Experience working collaboratively with other functions and demonstrated success managing cross-functional teams.
  • Has a broad network of investment industry and biopharmaceutical industry contacts.
